The hotel was very nice. The only problem with the room was the security locks on the door, there wasn't one. The subway is quite a walk for the more mature traveler. It ended up being about 4 long blocks which was ok in the a.m. but after a long day plus in the late evening you had to walk past a park and there was quite a few homeless sleeping there. The staff at the hotel left alot to be desired. They were not friendly at all and the door man wouldn't help with our luggage upon arrival. He did finally hold the door open for us!

This was a nice enough hotel, very clean and we were allowed to check in early. I would not stay there again though, largely due to the location. Three blocks from the Metro doesn't seem like much until you have to drag luggage, etc. Also, the hotel was in Thomas Circle, which means to get to it you are forced to use five separate intersections! If I had been using a car I guess it woould have been better, but the metro is so much cheaper I never rent a car in DC. CVS across the street was convenient. Pool was OK, with a lifeguard on duty. Lastly be careful which direction you walk when you leave the hotel, as if you are not careful you will end up on some dicey side streets which may not be the safest choice.

Friendly staff, clean rooms, good location for navigating DC. The rooms were on the small side, but didn't spend much time in the room. Free wifi. No 'resort' fee for the pool or exercise area. Just a few blocks to a Metro station and a few more blocks to the Mall. A CVS across the street, plenty of restaurants nearby. Nice restaurant in the hotel. Outdoor pool was very nice and popular with the guests. Great price compared with other hotels in the area. Fee for use of business center. I would stay there again.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and nicely decorated. The bathroom was small but adequate for the two of us. The lobby is very beautiful and tranquil. We loved the outdoor pool - so relaxing! Also, we found free parking on the street at night and a day parking lot next door for $7. This is a bargain in DC!

Washington Plaza hotel: 11 bedbug's bites

I stayed at the Washington Plaza hotel from June 26th to 28th 2009 in room 434. The morning of the first night, I woke up with three bites on my shoulder and back. At first, I did not pay attention to these inconveniences for I thought I had been bitten by mosquitoes. Throughout the day the bites became more and more painful. The morning of the second night, I had more bites on my hands and arms. The bites from the previous days were itching a lot. The third and last morning in the room 434, I had 11 bites throughout my body. The bites were swollen and very itchy. When I came back to San Francisco on the evening of June 28th, I felt so bad that I went to a pharmacist who, after examining the bites, sent me to a doctor. It turned out that I had been bitten by bedbugs and had severe allergic body reactions. I immediately sent an email to the management of the Washington Plaza hotel, informing them about the sanitary issue. Having worked in hotel industry before, I know that such a problem leads to the closure of all the bedrooms surrounding the infested room on the same floor as well as the upper and lower floors. It is called “boxing” the infected room. Some hotel managers are very reluctant to do so because it means a lack of revenue for the hotel. Bedbugs are not related to hotel bad hygiene. However fighting this issue is the full responsibility of the hotel management. In my case, I have not received any response from the hotel manager. So, I cannot attest that the Washington Plaza management has implemented the right procedure to prevent any more misfortune for their clients. I hope that the hotel management has not chosen to dig their heads in the sand and hoped for the pest infection to disappear on its own. So be aware of the room 434 and the surrounding rooms.
