  • Can't beat the location - but don't expect fancy

This hotel has a great location, right next to the theater that is playing ""We will Rock You"" and right next to a good tube location. We were here for over a week, and never called a cab, were were able to get everywhere with the tube or walking. The concierge staff was usually very helpful, the front desk reasonably helpful. The room made me think I was in a hostel - ours was comically small, but since we weren't spending lots of time in it that wasn't an issue, but we couldn't even pass each other around the bed. No closet, no iron, no fridge or mini-bar - none of that sort of thing (I don't know if better rooms were available). Vending machine in the hallway. Fast food in the immediate vicinity - Buger King down the street (with the dollar being pummeled, Burger King was a reasonable place to eat on this trip). I personally found the hotel restaurant a bit dull, and the bar was very expensive. No internet in the rooms - you need to buy a wireless package (expensive again)and haul your laptop to the small lounge above the lobby. They did have two computers in the lounge you could use for a fee, which I think was small. I was in the lounge late at night working and there was a vacuum going in the lobby and a mouse made its way in and the vacuum scared it all the way up the lounge. The night clerk didn't take me really seriously until I started screaming a bit when the mouse ran over my computer cord - then he came up to inspect. Think that was a bit of a fluke, but sort of creepy. Even with that, I would go back.

If you are looking for a mid-range hotel in central London then you can do no better than the St. Giles.

It's location at the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street puts you within easy reach of many of London's attractions - walking distance of Covent Garden and the British Museum, for example, and with excellent tube and bus connections to places further afield.

Breakfast is hectic and you may have to queue if you arrive after 8 am, as the hotel is very popular with package tours and students, but it is worth it just for the hot chocolate!

There were a few hiccups in service but these were quickly sorted out and, with the special rates available at weekends, you'd be wasting your time and money booking anywhere else.

I have stayed here three times, and there will be many more in the future.
