Affordable Alternative to Hong Kong

The High speed Ferry is literally right next door. The different ferries go to downtown Hong Kong, Macau, and in 30 minutes non-stop to the Hong Kong International Airport. For some airlines you can actually check-in and check your bags before you board the ferry.
If you plan on using this a home base for a visit to Hong Kong, make sure that you get a MULTIPLE ENTRY CHINEESE VISA. (Fee is now the same.)
Also if you are flying to/from other Chinese cities the fares are often half the cost from Shenzhen than from Hong Kong.
The bad thing is the location. The red light district is right outside of the front gate. If you cross over that street however, it is a safe short 5-minute walk to a wonderful nightlife area.
