  We stayed at the Barcelona Universal Hotel for a complete week and found this hotel to have a few good perks. Metro is right outside front entrance, so once you decipher the metro map - traveling throughout the city is a snap. Las Ramblas is a nice 10min walk away and is far enough away from the noisy downtown main drag (would avoid staying on Las Ramblas). Free internet can be accessed through lobby computers and found them to be very handy. Hotel staff was excellent, door men can speak multiple languages and offered good pointers on eating establishments and security. Rooms are very clean (my wife is an RN) so this was a main concern of hers... it would appear this place was remodeled recently so each floor looks great. Each room has a safe that can store wallets, passports and the like. Hotel breakfast was just ok and would recommend eating outside the hotel... for the money, you will get a better and cheaper meal outside the hotel. We only had one minor problem... this hotel sits on Parallel Ave. which means it can get noisy. If you can avoid a room with windows on the Parallel, you should be fine. Otherwise use ear plugs to sleep comfortably. There is so much to see in Barcelona, we feel the must see attractions are Las Ramblas, Familia Sagrada, Plaza Cataylun, Barcelonetta (beach area), Barrio Gothic, Maritime and the Pablo Picasso Museum that is located in the Barrio Gothic area in a very historic building. Hope you have fun like we did... you will like to the food, the people and the atmosphere of this city!

  First of all, this hotel was NOT in the Barrio Gotico as advertised; it was in the Raval which is MUCH grittier an area. Being a young guy, I felt fairly safe walking late at night, but I would not have wanted my wife walking in our area at night. The safest walk from this hotel to Las Ramblas passed a regular prostitute hang-out; the worst path passed several homeless people, etc. I would recommend staying either farther north in Eixample or actually in the Barrio Gotico instead. If you must stay in the Raval, this was not a bad hotel -- fairly clean, fairly large room, decent bathroom, and nice enough service (plus, free internet). The beds were among the least comfortable I've experienced in 10+ hotels in Europe.

  Staying at the Hotel Barcelona Universal was such a wonderful experience. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful (all fluent in 3 or more languages). The location is perfect, on the avinguda Paralel, the metro stop is a few steps from the doorway and it's in easy walking distance to Raval, Las Ramblas and many other Barrio's. The rooms are extremely clean and furnished with minimalist style. Don't forget to stop by the roof-top pool for the AMAZING views, you can see the Sagrada Familia and the Olympic torch just to name a couple of things. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it any anyone!

  BCN Universal was lovely. Excellant desk service, tastefully done lobby and rooms. Immaculate! Reminded me of some NY boutique hotels I've stayed at without the NY price. This hotel made my Barcelona experience even better since it was located near Los Ramblas.
