I stayed at the Opal Hotel in August. What I found was the following o We found the area unsafe. The concierge desk told us not to walk at night around the neighborhood as it was a transient area o The front door was secured (needed your room key to get in)…I guess due to the transient population. o The rooms were small. We could barley moved around in the bathroom it was so small. o The hotel was not as close to attractions such as the Warf and union square as noted on the website Overall, the Opal is affordable, but at what cost? Would you rather spend a few extra dollars on a hotel on Market Street, or get mugged on the street at the Opal?

At check in the clerk advised us ( 2 women travellers) not to venture out at night in a large section of city streets right outside the hotel doors... we went to lunch and then looked down the side streets off Van Ness... very derelict area, with many street people sleeping or loitering around,. we felt very unsafe based on what we saw. Hotel staff were less than helpful in helping us arrange other accomodations... basically said "we have our money from travelocity so if you want to leave go ahead.. we have our money for the full stay." Travelocity was great... they rebooked us ...it took an hour but it worked out. Our cabbbie the next day said the hotel is one street off the red light transvestite area. this explains the warning from the clerk. The rooms at the Opal were clean , but very small especially the bathroom.. could barley get in to close the door... if it was in a better neigborhood we would likley have stayed there.

This hotel was amazing. It was located downtown so it was close to everything. We took the bus to get to Fisherman's Wharf which was about a 15 min ride. The room was pretty big considering a lot of people told me rooms in San Fran were tiny. The bed was extremely comfortable and in the morning we got an awesome view of the sun coming up. My husband and I will stay here again if we are ever in SF again.

We booked a week at the Opal, for a conference I had to attend. The location is great - bus stops on either side, lots of great restaurants nearby & a movie theater right next door! Check out Tommy's Joint across the street - great food, even better drinks, HUGE servings. The Peruvian/Mexican restaurant diagonal from Tommy's was a very pleasant surprise - excellent food. There is also a yummy little bakery about two doors further down the street. The service was wonderful at the hotel, the morning breakfast was okay (plain bagels, 3 kinds of cereal, a nice nut bread) but not fancy. Every request was met, and the information available from the staff on things to do & places to go was superb. We had to change rooms to a smoking room after the first night. Even though those rooms are farther away from the front lobby, the walk was manageable & the room every bit as nice inside as the room in the main building. The only gripe I have is about the amenities - dinky packets of shampoo & lotion, no bottles, no conditioner, and no soap dish, only one bar of soap. Despite that minor peeve, we will definitely stay again!
