  Java Beach coffee shop next door is the place to be, and walking along the shore. This is not for light sleepers, as the streetcar is directly in front of the hotel. Service is uneven from day to day.
  First day was a shortage of towels, Second day the trash was emptied, but nothing else done.
  Third day, the room was cleaned, towels in place etc. Room was recently renovated, the hall leading to the rooms was not. Main entrance is out to a narrow driveway which was dangerous
  with kids. Parking was first come, first grab with very small spaces.
  Access to city via streetcar very easy. Walk on beach was nice, a few places to eat in walking distance.

  The Oceanview Motel is as close as you can get to a beach-front hotel in SF, and it's door opens to the bus/tram line with very frequent service. It was being renovated while we stayed there (9/07) so our room was very fresh and new - except for the rug. A drawback was no elevators - no handicap accessibility. A very cool feature was skylights in the 3rd floor bathrooms (they use the non-US method of Ground Floor, 1st Flr, 2nd, so we were on the '2nd' Flr). Those skylights provided fabulous light, and just enough even at night to be able to see enough to get to the bthrm. The owners live in the hotel (they should open a restaurant, it smells so good from their quarters) and were very friendly and helpful. Security was ok, but the entrance/exit is into a garage through a solid door, so it's impossible to see if anyone is on the other side. Parking is free, but limited spaces might leave you looking for street parking. There's a very good coffee shop/restaurant on the corner. Rms include microwave & refrig., which I hadn't read when I looked it up, so we were pleasantly surprised. A very good deal if you aren't locked into Holiday Inn or better hotels.
