The hotel itself is good - our rooms were great. They were spotless and comfortable. The bathrooms are very nice and well-stocked. The location is a bit odd - a couple of small restaurants nearby, but only open for lunch. There is a neat clothing store across the street, but that's it! The pool is nice, but was very crowded the day we were there - so crowded that we just got out after five minutes and went back to the room. The hotel restaurant is a bit expensive for what it is - the food is good, though. Very good eggplant and mint ravioli! The worst part of our stay at this hotel was a couple of the front desk people - very, very snippy and unhelpful to say the least. I asked a few questions and got only terse, unclear answers. It's the staff that really makes a four star hotel and this will never be such unless these guys change their attitudes! (The person on duty when we checked out at 4:00 am was good, though!)

We were planning to stay at the Hotel Granduca in San Giuliano Terme but that place was a DIVE! I called the Accademia from the lobby of the Granduca and they had a room. A quick cab ride and we were much happier. We ate a a nice little restaurant behind the hotel and brought stuff to the room for a picnic. The shuttle only runs to the airport and train, you can't get a ride back... Kind of odd. It seems to me that since it has to go back anyway, why not let guests save cab fare.
